Story & photos by Ted Donovan Did you know Mexicali has the largest Chinatown in Mexico? It's true and you can visit the area. A group called La Chinesca is preserving the Chinese area of Mexicali and the traditions of those immigrants who came from China. The Chinese traveled to the hot, barren deserts of Mexicali, Baja California's capital, around 1900 to work on the railroads and irrigation canals being built on both sides of the border. After the construction was completed, many stayed and became merchants who opened up bars, restaurants, shops in the area now called La Chinesca next to the US/Mexico border. Mexicali's history can not be written with out the contribution of the Chinese immigrants. Underneath their shops and businesses, the industrious Chinese built elaborate basements, tunnels and pathways to both escape the extreme heat of the summers (as high as 120F) and to live/work unmolested from the local community. BEST DORADO SEASON EVER? La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 29-Aug. 7, 2023 SHORT ATTENTION SPAN FISHING REPORT WEATHER:  No doubt hot and humid!  Stay hydrated and covered up.  Common sense!  It’s in the high 90’s to low 100’s in the daytime…normal summer temps.  Actually maybe cooler than many parts of the U.S. strangely enough.  But, humidity is high as well.  Thankfully, the beach is right outside! WATER:   Mostly warm and blue.  Surface temps on the water are high 70’s to low 80’s. Actually and strangely COOLER than normal!  But great swimming, snorkel and scuba conditions. SPECIES HOOKED THIS WEEK:   Dorado, bonito, roosterfish, wahoo (lost), marlin (lost), pargo (2 types), snapper, cabrilla, jack crevalle, palometa, pompano TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS FLEET:   Primarily dorado.  Not as many as La Paz, but more of the bigger dorado.  Plus inshore species like roosters, pargo and cabrilla.   By Kathleen Rellihan July 18, 2023 As our boat pulled into Los Islotes, a rocky landmass in the turquoise waters of Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, I gazed out at the area’s newest residents and couldn’t contain my enthusiasm. “Babies, they’re all babies!” I squealed as 20 or 30 sea lion pups barked in unison. These small islands near La Paz are home to a permanent colony of about 600 sea lions. With my wet suit and snorkel on, I jumped into the water and swam among the playful puppies. Most visitors to Baja California Sur, the southern part of the Baja Peninsula, head straight to Cabo San Lucas, the region’s hub of visitor activity. If you are in Bahia de Los Angeles and get a chance, stop by Siete Filos Cafe. It’s located at the former turtle sanctuary, Campo Archelon (on the road to La Gringa). Coffee/iced tea, good food and relaxed atmosphere, Wi-Fi and A/C.
