Slow Baja Winter Expedition 2024 - Day 4
Day Four - Heading south to the Whale Sanctuary
Morning came early on day 4 as we knew we had the longest travel day of the trip. However, the reward would be great; whale watching in Laguna San Ignacio the next morning. After a good breakfast at Rancho Santa Inez, we hit the road. Cataviña doesn't have a gas station, but local entrepreneurs sell gas (at a high cost) out of gas canisters. It's actually a life saver as we are in the middle of a 200 mile stretch with no gas stations.
The drive to San Ignacio was uneventful. We stopped in Guerrero Negro at the state boundary of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Talk about timing. We were on a mission to distribute baseball gear to the kids of Baja and pulled over next to us were a couple vans of the local youth team; Los Ostiones. Matt of Barbers for Baja and his buddy Mike started distributing some of our gear to the kids. Those smiles are what makes it all worth it. Once we said goodbye to the baseball team, the whole Slow Baja Winter Expedition headed for lunch at the famous Tacos El Muelle foodtruck. Muy delicioso! Highly recommended.
On to the oasis town of San Ignacio with it's underground river that flows to the surface just outside town and it's 17th century Spanish mission in the middle of the desert. Since it wasn't our final stop for the night, we decided to grab a cone at Edson's Ice Cream Shop (again, well worth it) before we headed another 1.5 hours to Laguna San Ignacio and Campo Kuyima. Tommorrow we would see the whales.
