Day Five - Whale Watching at Laguna San Ignacio

Woke up early today for a special occasion; whale watching with the friendly whales on Baja. The Slow Baja crew had two reserved pangas with Campo Kuyima waiting for us. It was a short boat ride to the area where most of the grey whales were. Our knowledgeable capitanes consistently put us on the spot. It was magical. We saw many whales, most came near the boats and some lucky passengers were able to actually touch them. One of life's greatest bucket list moments.

We returned to the camp before noon, packed up camp and headed through the salt flats back to the village of San Ignacio. We had an important date with the local baseball manager and his players for Baja Beisbol. First order of business was to check into the Slow Baja lodging for the night; Rice & Beans Motel and Restaurant.

Olaf, Wino and I actually stayed at the Villas LuGar, a new option for accommodations in town. It was a bit off the beaten path on a nearby family ranch. The architecture and design was modern while the amenities inside were more than you'd expect in a small Baja town. And the peaceful atmosphere, especially at night, made for a really comfortable stay. I believe their were 3 buildings for rent; individually or as a group. I'd definitely recommend it.

Back to baseball. We all took a short drive to the local baseball field to meet the head coach who managed all the local kids in baseball instruction, etc. He has over 25 kids there when we arrived. This was the main reason Baja Beisbol brought down the gear. We handed out gloves, cleats, bats, hats, pants, and baseballs. The kids were thrilled and some were we. Baja Beisbol is doing good things throughout the peninsula so reach out and help if you can.

After the excitement of the day, the Slow Baja Winter Expedition settled down the Rice & Beans restaurant for a good meal and tasty margaritas. In the morning, we'd be heading north.
